Eliezer Goldberg (1931-2022) was an Israeli jurist, served as a Supreme Court judge and as the State Comptroller and Ombudsman of the State of Israel  


Family Background

Eliezer Goldberg was born on May 24th, 1931 in Jerusalem and was raised there. 

 

Education

In 1949 he graduated from Rehavia Gymnasium in Jerusalem and in 1952-1955 he studied Law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Goldberg served as an intern in the office of the president of the District Court in Jerusalem, judge Zvi E. Baker and in 1957 was granted his law license.

Professional Background

He worked as an attorney in the private sector for seven years (at attorney P. Rabinovich firm and attorney Hiller and A. Dori firm) and afterwards, in 1964, was appointed to a judge at the Traffic Court. In 1965-1974 he served as a judge at the Magistrate Court in Jerusalem. In 1974 he was appointed to the District Court in Jerusalem and in 1982 he was appointed as a vice president of the District Court. In 1983 he was appointed as an acting judge in the Supreme Court and a year later - in 1984, he was appointed as a permanent judge in the Supreme Court where he served until 1998.  

On May 26th, 1998, Goldberg was appointed by the Knesset to serve as the State Comptroller and Ombudsman of the State of Israel. In the course of his seven years' term as State Comptroller (until July 4th, 2005), Goldberg acted and made an effort to improve the transparency and the public service in Israel.      


Additional Roles

Following his retirement, Goldberg fulfilled central roles in important public committees. He served as the head of the Central Elections Committee for the 12th Knesset, the head of the Advisory Committee for Appointing Seniors and the head of the committee for examining the foundation of judicial discretion in verdicts. He also served in the Shamgar Commission of Inquiry of the Massacre at the Tomb of the Patriarchs and the committee on conviction based on confession only. In 2008-2013 he served as the Ombudsman of the Israeli Judiciary.
