The complainant contacted the Ombudsman with a complaint against the Israel Police, alleging that despite his request to the local police station to  change the reason given for closing a criminal investigation opened in his case, he had not  received a substantive response to his inquiries for approximately a year.

The complainant further explained that several years earlier, a relative had filed a complaint against him for assault – which, according to him, was entirely baseless and stemmed from a family dispute. Although the complaint was closed within a few hours, the reason cited for the case closure was “insufficient evidence." However, with this reason, the police file remained on record, negatively affecting the complainant's career as a lawyer and making it difficult for him to obtain a firearm license. The complainant requested that the case be closed forr the reason “no criminal offense committed,” which he claimed accurately reflected the circumstances.

Following the Ombudsman’s inquiry, the Israel Police reexamined the investigation file and the complainant’s request, and ultimately decided to grant the request and change the reason for closing the case to “no criminal offense committed.”
