The State Comptroller and Ombudsman met with heads of Arab local authorities: "I call upon the Prime Minister, the Minister of National Security, the Attorney General, the State Attorney and the Police Commissioner – we must eliminate the crime in the Arab population"
The State Comptroller and Ombudsman, Matanyahu Englman, met in Sakhnin with heads of local authorities in the Arab sector, headed by the Mayor of Sakhnin Mazen Ghnaim. Apart from him, the heads of the local authorities of Kafr Manda, Majd al-Krum, Kaukab Abu al-Hija, Yafia and Bi'ina also took part in the meeting.
The heads of the local authorities spoke about the lack of personal security among the residents of the Arab sector and the inaction of the state authorities in the matter. They gave an account of the scope of the acts of murder and about the loss of personal security among the Arab population.
The Comptroller said that "Last year the number of murders in the Arab sector reached nearly 250 victims. This is almost double the figure for 2020, that totaled 147 people in the Arab population. It transpired from a report we published last week that nearly 90% of contractors are required to pay protection money.
In view of the worrisome figures, I have decided to open an audit on the elimination of violence and crime in Arab society and the prevention of criminal parties taking over tenders in the local authorities.
I call upon the Prime Minister, the Minister of National Security, the Attorney General, the State Attorney and the Police Commissioner to take action in the matter as soon as possible. We must eliminate the crime in the Arab population".
