Discussion at the State Audit Committee about the Special Audit Report Dealing with the State's Preparedness for an Earthquake (14.2.23)

Following the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, the Knesset's State Audit Committee held a discussion about the special audit report dealing with the State's preparedness for an earthquake - national infrastructures and structures

The findings and recommendations were presented at the discussion by David Bar, the head of the department which wrote the report in the Economic and National Infrastructures Audit Division; and audit directors Nathan Shtibelman and Yaakov Strauss.

"The destructive earthquake in Turkey and the terrible consequences which followed are a wake-up call for the decision makers in the State", said David Bar, the head of the department which wrote the report in the Economic and National Infrastructures Audit Division.

"The State Comptroller, some time ago and even before the latest earthquakes, instructed two audit departments in our office to conduct audits dealing with earthquakes.

The audits are in advanced stages: one report, about the preparedness of the local authorities for earthquakes, focuses on Beit She'an, Tiberius, Zefat, Kiryat Shmona and Hatzor HaGlilit - and the Comptroller is considering publishing it shortly as a special report.

The second report is a follow-up report to this report, The State's Preparedness for Earthquakes - National Infrastructures and Structures, which was conducted in 2018".

Bar emphasized that "Catastrophic damages to people and property following an earthquake are not decrees of fate. The Government must act quickly and with determination, there is no time to lose".
