Comptroller Englman at the International Ombudsman Institute conference: This is how the Office of the Ombudsman makes it easier for complainants to exercise their rights

State Comptroller and Ombudsman Matanyahu Englman told his colleagues at the conference held in Greece about the informational activities that the Office of the Ombudsman carries out – including the Ombudsman in the" Community project".

State Comptroller and Ombudsman Matanyahu Englman and Director of the Office of the Ombudsman Esther Ben-Haim participated this week in a conference of the International Ombudsman Institute – Europe Region (IOI Europe).

The conference, which was held under the title of "Ombudsman's Offices Are Recharged: Powers and Implementation in the Post-modern Era," was held in Greece.

Comptroller Englman represented Israel at the session that discussed making the Office's services accessible to various populations, and told about the various ways that the Office of the Ombudsman makes it easier for complainants to exercise their rights – and in particular complainants that belong to Israel's social and geographic periphery.

Comptroller Englman told the conference's participants about how the Office has established regional reception offices throughout the country, employs workers who speak various languages and with multi-cultural backgrounds and carries out informational activities among various populations. For example, as part of the Ombudsman in the Community project, the Office's employees meet with social organizations involved in exercising rights, explain the Office's powers to volunteers, and gather complaints in order to help complainants.

At the conference, Comptroller and Ombudsman Englman signed a memorandum of understanding with the British ombudsman on the mutual sharing of knowledge and experience in investigating complaints, and sharing preferred complaint-investigation practices in order to continue to improve the public service.

The Speaker of the Greek Parliament, the Interior Minister of Greece and the Ombudsman of Greece, who is serving as the president of the International Ombudsman Institute – Europe Region, also spoke at the conference.
