State audit in Israel focuses on the examination
of the activities of the executive authority and whether they
have been carried out in accordance with the principles of economy,
efficiency, effectiveness and moral integrity. The function
of the State Comptroller is defined in the Basic Law: The State
Comptroller. The findings of the audit are brought to the attention
of the audited bodies for their response and in order to induce
improvement in management. The reports are then submitted to
the Knesset and published. The State Comptroller's audit evaluation
is independent and he is responsible to the Knesset.
On July 4, 2005 Justice Micha Lindenstrauss, the former President of the District Court in Haifa, commenced his seven year term as State Comptroller and Ombudsman. He was elected by the Knesset on May 25, 2005, and took his oath of office at the Knesset on June 29, 2005.
