Eliezer Goldberg, The State Comptroller and Ombudsman,
was born in Jerusalem in 1931. In 1949 he concluded his
high school studies at the Hebrew Gymnasium in Rehavia,
Jerusalem. During the years 1952 - 1956 he studied law
at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He served his clerkship
in the chambers of the President of the Jerusalem District
Court, Z.E. Becker. He was accredited as a lawyer by the
Israel Bar Association in 1957. During the years 1957
- 1960 he served as a lawyer in the office of Adv. P.
Rabinowitz and then worked until May 1964 in the office
of Adv. Hiller and A. Dori.
In the years 1964 - 1965 he served as a judge of the Traffic
Court of Jerusalem. From 1965 until 1974 he served as
a judge of the Jerusalem Magistrates' Court, beginning
as judge in the Municipal Court. He was appointed a judge
of the Jerusalem District Court in August 1974 and Deputy
President of the Court in May 1982. From March 1983 until
March 1984 he served as Acting Justice of the Supreme
Court. On April 18, 1984 he was appointed a justice of
the Supreme Court.
He served as chairman of the Central Election Committee
for the 12th Knesset. He was first a member and then chairman
of the Criminal Procedure Committee. He served as a member
of the Committee of Inquiry into the events at the Cave
of Machpela. He was chairman of the committee to investigate
ways of structuring legal discretion in sentencing.
He was elected State Comptroller and Ombudsman on May
26, 1998 by the Knesset for a term of a seven years, commencing
July 1, 1998.
